Visitors to Cornwall often comment on how green the City is.

Residents take pride in the quality of the natural environment in and around the built areas of the City. There are a number of initiatives underway to ensure that the environment remains healthy and sustainable for years to come.

City of Cornwall

The City of Cornwall is committed to building a greener community. Cornwall City Council has identified Environmental Stewardship as one of three key strategic priorities to guide the City’s efforts in the months and years ahead, and a variety of projects and initiatives are being implemented to help achieve this commitment. These include weekly, single-stream recycling collection, and the encouragement of citizens to participate in the 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Raisin Region Conservation Authority

The Raisin Region Conservation Authority focuses on conserving, protecting and enhancing natural resources in Cornwall and surrounding area through a variety of environmental programs.

The Conservation Authority also oversees the Remedial Action Plan for the St. Lawrence River (Cornwall) Area of Concern.

Transition Cornwall

Transition Cornwall+ is a community group created to build resilience and sustainability in Cornwall and the surrounding rural area in preparation for the combined challenges of peak oil, climate change, and global economic instability.

St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences

The River Institute is a not-for-profit organization that focuses on environmental research, education, and outreach. The organization conducts research on freshwater ecosystems in the region, runs environmental science education programs for families and students, and hosts a variety of community activities related to environmental themes, including a speaker series and clean ups.

Gray’s Creek Conservation Area

Gray’s Creek Conservation Area offers more than 43 hectares of natural landscape that includes 5 kilometres of nature trails and paved bike paths. The diverse area is protected, enhanced and restored by the Raison Region Conservation Authrority. Visitors to Gray’s Creek can enjoy cycling, hiking and walking their pets on both the nature trails and the paved bike path.
